Running a business in the Philippines July 14, 2008

This is a topic thats a headache for me because quite simply im running against a tide of negative information and comments from many people who i have yet to see any of them actually trying to do a business inside the Philippines. Advice from most ” start with a large fortune if you want to makeĀ a small one in the Philippines” or that you cant trust anyone when it comes to money. The officials expecting bribes, the family expecting to take a large chunk of the business or thefts from family and staff. Now im trying to go against this tide because i know there are plenty of successful businesses in the Philippines but very few of them actually state what they are doing and also dont share information. Which as you can guess only leaves the negatives. Already this year ive been proven wrong about a family member who has left me out of a home and out of pocket. But like most families i believe there is always a bad apple even if you dont see them until something materialises. So im back on the horse and currently we have a small piggery business which has 10 pigs. We have enough scope to push this well above 50 but lets start small and see how it goes. The biggest problem ive seen in business in the Philippines is most people dont know what they are doing. They have lacked business experience back in home countries and maybe never even been in business before. Also many are still thinking in home currencies instead of Peso which means they expect unrealisticĀ profits. Then there are issues with politicans and/or local gangsters forcing over ownership of businesses mob style tactics that keep foreign investment and knowledge at bay. Im going to prove this can work just give me time! Its easy to fail but to suceed just takes time.
